I am an author and inner city pastor whose passion is to pursue radical faithfulness to Jesus in the context of true community. I am the author of “The Cost of Community: Jesus, St. Francis & Life in the Kingdom” (InterVarsity Press), in which I invite readers into a life of obedience to Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, exploring the text through the life of St. Francis of Assisi and our church, Little Flowers Community. My next book, “Vulnerable Faith: Missional Living in the Radical Way of St. Patrick” (Paraclete Press), hits shelves early next year. (For a full list of my titles, visit the Books page).
I am a pastoral leader at Little Flowers Community, a Franciscan-Anabaptist faith community in Winnipeg’s downtown West End. I am co-director of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Urban Ministries Winnipeg. I am also the director of Chiara House , a new intentional Christian community who share life “on the margins”.
Most importantly, I am husband to my Australian wife, Kim, and father to my Ethiopian son, Micah.
This blog is place dedicated to exploring what it means to be missional followers of Jesus. Even as I write the word “missional”, I am aware of how widely used (and misused) the word has become. For us, the word is not taken lightly, not simply a new buzz word for “evangelism” or “outreach”, but a definitive word as to the nature who we are and how we are to live into the intentions of Jesus as His people every day and in all things. Drawing from my own life, community, study and engagement with other Christians worldwide, this blog welcomes conversation. Everyone is welcome with the provision that we all seek first to understand before expecting to be understood.
In addition to my books & this blog, I am contributor to several online publications, such as The Huffington Post, Red Letter Christians, ChurchLeaders.com and elsewhere. I have also published in magazines and other print media, largely focusing on the call the Christian community, discipleship and missionality.
Our ministry is one that relies entirely upon the generosity of people like you. I am not paid in my primary role as a pastor, supporting ourselves through our position as missionaries with YWAM Canada. While we continue to find ways to live more simply and subsidize missionary income through other means, we still rely on your generosity in this work. The nature of our ministry in this inner city community requires a level of time and energy that has not allowed us to be fully bi-vocational. We would like to ask you to prayerfully consider becoming part of our prayer & financial support team.
